Anyone ever read the definition of music?
The bing dictionary states that music is "sounds that produce effect: sounds, usually produced by instruments or voices, that are
arranged or played in order to create an effect." So if by that definition music is created to cause an effect, how is music effecting you? I just read an article not to long ago where scientist did a study on todays music culture and it showed that music has devolved from a very complex nature to a state where new songs especially in the pop genre are more bland and louder. I'm sure that anyone who listens to the radio can tell you that, but here's the link to the article if you're interested http://www.nme.com/news/various-artists/65153 .
At the risk of sounding like a hipster. Here's my main question if music is meant to have an effect, but has been shown to be more bland and homogeneous (my big fancy word for the day) then what kind of effect is it having on our society? I firmly believe that music is one of the number one things that shape children and teenagers, and the fact that songs like "Call me maybe" which make no sense are being ranked number one on charts, or that nicki minaj can put out a song that's only lyric is "you a stupid ho" speaks volumes.
And if we think that mainstream media is biased and has an agenda, is it a huge jump to think that mainstream music is biased and has an agenda? There are so many new and amazing venues in music so why is it that when you turn the radio on to any station you are guaranteed to hear the same songs over and over? Even on the oldies stations you're pretty much assured to hear blondie, the beatles, and at least 10 ac/dc songs and nothing more. There's is so much more out there in the music realm so why is mainstream music putting us in this small little box where you have to hear adele every hour on the hour? Could it be that mainstream music has the same agenda as mainstream media? keeping the poplulation dumbed down and in a trance of simple music where the song has no meaning and requires little thought to comprehend.
With that being said I'd like to show case some of todays' new genre's of music that are not mainstream music and you will never hear on the radio, but in my personal opinion are very good. All you who grew up with led zepplin and the Beegies probably won't be impressed, but at least check it out so you can confirm that you don't like it.
first we've gotta post the song that the blog is named after it's considered math metal and is pretty heavy so if you're not into that I highly recommend just looking up the lyrics.

Next a new and upcoming genre is dubstep. This is much softer, but it should be known that dubstep is like the best work out music ever)

Then there's indie style music. This genre is an awesome alternative to pop because it's upbeat but the lyrics still mean something and it's not all lip syncing)

There is even such a thing as alternative hip hop. This band gorillaz is pretty interesting because it doesn't actually exist. yay virtual bands!

Alternative rock this genre has been around for awhile but there are some new names out there that are pretty good. (btw this song is freaking amazing and should be the theme for the tea party)http://youtu.be/w8KQmps-Sog
Those are just a few new genres there are tons more out there I'm sure. I hope you enjoy listening and serioulsy consider how music around you is effecting the things you do!
